Because of the Wii U’s patchy record of third-party games, some are suggesting Nintendo’s next console should be more architecturally similar to the competition so third-party publishers can more easily port Nintendo versions of their multiplatform games. The strategy sounds good, but there’s just one problem—the GameCube was similar to its two competing consoles, and it didn’t sell, either. So should Nintendo keep being different or try to be more conventional? In this episode of PONDering, we look at the third-party situation facing Nintendo’s next console—codenamed NX—and, ultimately, whether or not third-party games even matter on Nintendo consoles anymore.
