Peru: Funds Allocated to Protect Ancient Geoglyphs

Peru has allocated close to $US3million for the second phase of a project to protect the famous Nazca lines from damage stemming from the El Niño phenomenon. El Niño brings a weakening of winds that causes heat to accumulate, causing flooding in some areas and droughts in others. Damage is not only expected to crops and infrastructure, but also to World Heritage sites, such as the Nazca lines. These are a series of geoglyphs located in Peru’s Nazca desert. Some are simple stylized lines and others are more complex representations of animals, the most recognizable being a hummingbird. teleSUR
