More Mexicans are now leaving the U.S. than moving there

WASHINGTON — While immigration from Mexico is a big topic among Republican candidates for the presidential election, a study shows that, actually, more Mexicans are leaving the United States than moving there, according to a report published by the Pew Research Center on Thursday.

The report found that there were 11.7 million Mexicans in the U.S. in in 2014, compared to 12.8 million in 2007.

From 2009 to 2014, 870,000 Mexicans migrated to the U.S., but slightly more than a million left to return home during the same period, resulting in a net reversal in the flow of migrants.

Of the one million or so who went back to Mexico, 61 percent said they did so to reunite with their families. Fourteen percent were deported, and 6 percent went back for employment.

With the U.S. economy's slow recovery from recession, fewer low-skilled jobs are available for immigrants, making traveling north for work a less enticing prospect. The U.S. has also toughened immigration laws and enforcement of immigration laws since the 2000s.

Though Mexicans have long made up the highest percentage of immigrants to the U.S., recent years have seen a surge in migrants from Asian, primarily from India and China, according to a New York Times report that cited Pew research.
