DOWNEY, CALIFORNIA — A police officer in a Los Angeles area suburb was ambushed and murdered in a police station parking lot on Wednesday night. At around 11 p.m. on Wednesday, Officer Ricardo Galvez was finishing up his shift for the evening when he arrived at the police station in Downey, California. Galvez was driving his own vehicle when he pulled into the station parking lot. Once he parked his car, Downey police say two gunmen ran up to his vehicle and opened fire, shooting through the windows. The attackers then got into a champagne-colored Nissan Altima and fled the scene. One officer came running out of the station to try to aid Galvez, while another officer nearby heard the gunshots and immediately gave chase. Police say the attackers drove to Montebello, ditched the car on Carob Way near Washington Boulevard and took off on foot. As of this morning, police now have five suspects in custody—four males and one female. Police believe the two gunmen were males. The murder weapons have not been recovered as of yet. Based on the nature of the attack, investigators believe the shooting was not random and Officer Galvez was targeted. Galvez served the Downey Police Department for five years following two tours with the United States Marines.
