A sad video has emerged from China of firefighters pulling 22 yak out of a frozen lake, only to find it was too late to save the animals' lives.

In the footage, filmed during the rescue attempt in Qinghai Province on Saturday, fire officers have to break up the ice to pull out the animals that fell through it.

According to news reports, the yaks were drinking by the lake when the ice ground broke suddenly and submerged the group. It took the rescue team more than two hours to retrieve the herd and sent their bodies back to the owner.
