At least 10 dead as TGV train derails during testing in eastern France

ECKWERSHEIM, FRANCE — Ten people were killed and five more were missing after a French high-speed train derailed during a test run Saturday.
The victims were among a team of 49 technicians on the train which went off the tracks near Strasbourg in northeastern France. The train was not carrying any passengers.
The TGV train was travelling at around 350 kph (217 mph) on a high-speed line as part of a test-run for the next generation of trains scheduled to go into service next year around spring.
Another 37 people were injured, including 12 critically, local officials said.
The high-speed train ended up under a bridge partly submerged in water of a 40-meter wide canal.
The accident appears to have been caused by "excessive speed" at Eckwersheim in eastern France while technicians were on board for testing, said senior official for the Alsace region Dominique-Nicolas Jane.
The police are still trying to determine the cause of the crash.
The is the first fatal accident since the TGV went into service in 1981.
Authorities are currently trying to retrieve the train's black box, said Stephane Ottavi, police commander for the Alsace region.
