Canadian couple dies getting frisky in hotel hot tub at daughter's wedding

QUINTANA ROO, MEXICO — A wedding turned into a tragedy earlier this week when the bodies of a Canadian couple were found two days before their daughter's big day.

Sixty-seven-year-old Charlie Mackenzie and 63-year-old Dorothy Mackenzie were enjoying themselves in the whirlpool spa in their hotel room at the Playacar Palace Resort in Mexico just after midnight on Tuesday.

The couple were making love when Charlie suffered a heart attack, his body pinning Dorothy down in the water, the Canadian Press reported.

Earlier reports indicated that the couple was electrocuted inside the tub, but the resort disputed the notion and said that all the equipment was functioning correctly.

The couple's bodies were found by their daughter at 10 a.m. on Tuesday when they missed a family breakfast, reported Riviera Maya News. An autopsy indicated that Dorothy died of asphyxia by submersion moments after her husband passed. Their deaths were deemed accidental, said officials.

Douglas Hastings, Charlie Mackenzie's brother-in-law, said they were far too devastated to worry about the wedding, and would instead be focused on cremating the couple's bodies.

It is unclear whether the wedding, scheduled for Thursday, was postponed or not.

"Canadian consular officials in Playa del Carmen, Mexico are in contact with local authorities to gather additional information," said Francois Lasalle, a spokesman with the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs.
