Argentina: Price Speculation Sparked by Macri’s Remarks
  • 8 years ago
As presidential runoff elections draw near in Argentina, price speculation has been fueled by right-wing candidate Mauricio Macri´s promises to halt taxes on grain production and devalue the peso. Since 2008, increased revenues generated by grain export taxes have helped finance social programs. According to Cabinet Chief Anibal Fernandez, the projected 17% peso devaluation would spark inflation of 50%, meaning that bread prices would rise and workers’ salaries would be negatively affected. teleSUR
