Did Missouri S&T student use fake GPS app to make racist threats?

COLUMBIA, MISSOURI — A 19-year old student was charged with making terroristic threats Wednesday after an online threat against black students emptied the campus of the University of Missouri.

Hunter Park, a student at Missouri University of Science and Technology, was arrested after the anonymous messaging app Yik Yak was used to make threats.

Police believe Park was behind an online threat made Tuesday in which the poster wrote "I'm going to stand my ground tomorrow and shoot every black person I see."

As Yik Yak only allows posts from users in the immediate vicinity, the threats led students to flee the campus in fear of violence, while several professors canceled classes.

Students later posted photos of the deserted campus.

But it is now thought that Park may have used a GPS spoofing app to fool the Yik Yak APP into thinking he was on campus at Mizzou when in fact he was around 100 miles away.

A Reddit poster with a similar user name to Park other social media accounts boasted about using fake APPs to post on Mizzou's Yik Yak.

Police arrested Park early Wednesday at his dorm at the Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla.

He is being held without bond.

Another student, 19-year old Connor Stottlemyre from Northwest Missouri State University, was also arrested for allegedly using Yik Yak to threaten black students at his school.

The University of Missouri has been the scene of rising racial tension over the last few months that saw African-American student Johnathan Butler go on hunger strike last week in protest at the school's perceived lack of action.

University of Missouri system President Tim Wolfe and the chancellor resigned on Monday in response to the protests.
