Giant hole opens up at Mississippi IHOP, swallows more than a dozen cars

MERIDIAN, MISSISSIPPI — A cave-in at a Mississippi IHOP parking lot swallowed more than a dozen cars on Saturday night. No one was reported injured.

At about 7:15 p.m. Saturday night, a series of booms were heard before the power went down at an IHOP in Meridian, Mississippi, reported WJTV. Customers said they experienced what felt like an earthquake.

As patrons rushed out of the restaurant, a large hole opened up in the ground and swallowed more than a dozen cars. The hole measured 35 feet wide, 400 feet long and about 20 feet deep, officials said.

Experts say this was not the result of a sinkhole, which is formed when an underground aquifer dries and leaves a void in the ground, causing the ground above to collapse.

"You can call it what you want, a cave-in or whatever, but it is not a sinkhole," Meridian Public Safety Director Buck Roberts said to the Meridian Star.

A water main underneath the parking lot was reported broken after the incident, however, Roberts said "the break is not the cause of our problems."

Engineers and contractors will be on scene Monday to determine the cause of the collapse. Heavy rain over the past two weeks may have contributed to the collapse.
