Centuries-old crypt full of skeletons found under Washington Square Park

NEW YORK — Dozens of skeletal remains were unearthed in the Big Apple just days after Halloween near an area that used to be a public burial ground.

According to Fox 5, contractors for the New York City Department of Design and Construction were carrying out construction to replace water mains near Washington Square Park earlier this week when they discovered crypts containing human remains three feet beneath the ground.

Two 15-by-20 foot burial vaults were discovered side-by-side, each and about 8 feet deep with wooden doors. One crypt contained the skeletal remains of about nine to 12 people, while the other had wooden coffins stacked one on top of the other, reports the New York Post.

Both are believed to date back to the late 18th or early 19th century, and was likely part of a cemetery that may have belonged to one of two Presbyterian churches that stood in the area.

Archaeologists working with the city are investigating the vaults and will be focusing on identifying those buried. Engineers are planning a new route for the water main project
in order to avoid disturbing the burial grounds, reports NBC.
