Bolivian Congress Debates Bill to Broaden Presidential Term Limits
  • 8 years ago
Debate continues in the Bolivian congress on a bill that will put a referendum on the ballot that will amend the constitution by extending presidential term limits. The amendment, to be voted on February 21, 2016, would allow presidents to serve three consecutive five-year terms, instead of the current two. If approved, it would enable highly popular President Evo Morales to run for reelection in 2019. The opposition charges that the referendum is a power grab by Morales. Dimitri O'Donnell reports from La Paz.
