Pentagon awards Northrop Grumman $60B stealth bomber contract

WASHINGTON — Northrop Grumman has this week won the bid for a US military contract worth almost $60 billion — the largest contract awarded by the Pentagon in over a decade.
The Pentagon on Tuesday announced it was upgrading its bomber fleet, adding a Long Range Strike Bomber designed to infiltrate enemy territory, reports CNN.
Boeing, Lockheed Martin, and Northrop Grumman, all U.S. Air Force combat jet suppliers, bid for the contract, with Boeing and Lockheed Martin launching a joint bid. In the end, the contract was awarded to Northrop Grumman.
Officials have not disclosed the specifics of the new LRS-B, though CNN reports, there are indications that it'll have stealth capabilities. The currently used B2-Spirit, also manufactured by Northrop Grumman, has stealth capabilities as well.
Other indications, according to CNN, are that the new bomber will be able to carry both nuclear and conventional weapons, and may be operated with or without a pilot.
The U.S. Air Force said in a press release that the LRS-B will be able to launch from the U.S. and strike any target around the world around the world.
A hundred aircrafts, each costing around $511 million, are set to be constructed to enter service by 2020, according to the Washington Post.
