General Motors recalls 1.4M cars over fire risks after two previous recalls failed to fix the problem

DETROIT — Carmaker General Motors is recalling over 1.4 million vehicles over a fire risk, including some that had been previously recalled.

The fire risk is caused by drops of oil which can fall onto the hot exhaust manifold following hard braking. This can lead to engine compartment fires, CNN Money reported.

The problem was first identified in 2007 and General Motors launched two recalls intended to fix the problem; one in 2008 and another in 2009. The latest recall was GM's third attempt, according to CBS News. However, the company has not yet come up with a solution.

There were 19 minor injuries related to the problem in the past six years but no crashes or deaths were reported, CNN Money reported. About 90 percent of the 1.4 million recalls are in the U.S, according to USA Today.

The models being recalled include the 1997-2004 Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, 1998-1999 Oldsmobile Intrigue and 1997-2004 Buick Regal.
