ISIS soldiers shave beards and dress like women to flee from Syria

ALEPPO, SYRIA — ISIS militants are shaving off their beards and disguising themselves as women to flee from Syria into Turkey.

Evidence of the shaving and cross-dressing comes from Sunday Times journalist Hala Jaber's Twitter account, where she posted three pictures she attributed to Leith Abou Fadel, the editor-in-chief of Al-Masdar News. She claims the pictures are of facial hair and razors left behind by ISIS members in Aleppo, as they prepare to flee from Syria into Turkey.

The Business-Standard reports that Russian military forces have claimed that thousands of jihadis have put down their weapons and fled to Turkey in the wake of an offensive. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has reported that at least 16 vehicles in a convoy were destroyed in an airstrike after they had just left Raqqa, an ISIS stronghold, on Saturday. The observatory said that the attack was not led by Washington-based forces, which means it could have been a Russian airstrike.

Shaving facial hair is against ISIS' strict interpretation of Islamic law, and they have previously arrested citizens for shaving and imprisoned them for three months. ISIS has also been known to throw men accused of being homosexuals from rooftops, which might not gel with their new-found practice of cross dressing.
