Officers win $5M after suing store for in 'straw buyer' gun sale

MILWAUKEE — A West Milwaukee gun store was found negligent after selling a firearm to a 'straw buyer' who later used it to shoot two police officers.

Fox6 reports that in May 2009, Jacob Collins, 21, helped 18-year-old Julius Burton buy a Taurus semi-automatic pistol from Badger Guns. Burton gave Collins $40 to help him buy the gun. One month later, Burton used the gun to shoot two officers, Graham Kunisch and Bryan Norberg in the face after they stopped him for riding his bike on the sidewalk.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Officer Kunisch was shot in the skull, where the bullet damaged his frontal lobe, took out his eye, and lodged in his jaw. Officer Norberg took a bullet to the mouth, where it shattered eight of his teeth before exiting through his cheek and slicing his shoulder.

Burton was sentenced to 80 years in prison for attempted murder, while Collins served two years for the illegal gun purchase.

NBC reports that in 2015, officers Kunisch and Norberg sued Badger Guns, arguing that the store employee exhibited gross negligence in allowing the sale to proceed even after signs that Collins was buying the gun on behalf of his 18-year-old companion.

A jury found the gun store liable in the shooting and awarded them more than $5 million in damages- about $1.5 million for Officer Norberg, $3.6 million for Officer Kunisch, and $730,000 for punitive damages.
