The remains of an elephant buried under the Vatican belong to an animal named Hanno which became a favorite of Pope Leo X.

The Vatican has an unexpected animal buried on its grounds. 
In 1962, workers were digging in the Belvedere Courtyard when they uncovered remains which they initially thought was a dinosaur. 
It was eventually determined that the skeleton belonged to an elephant which was gifted to the newly elected Pope Leo X by the king of Portugal in the early 1500s.
