NAACP Complaint Prompts Alaskan Bar to Change Name Of ‘Slave Auction’ Event

A complaint from the NAACP prompted the organizer of an Alaska Day charity event called the ‘slave auction,’ to change its name.

Alaska Day, which commemorates the passage of the state’s ownership from Russia to the U.S. on October 18, 1867, is marked by a variety of events, both official and otherwise. 
For decades, the Pioneer Bar in Sitka has been holding what they’ve called a ‘slave auction.'
Bidders try to win a couple of hours of participants’ time, typically for doing chores. 
This year, the Anchorage chapter of the NAACP asked that the name be changed.
