Laura Flanders Show - Bryan Stevenson

How do we end mass incarceration? Bryan Stevenson of the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery, Alabama, explores that question and more. Stevenson has won major legal challenges eliminating excessive and unfair sentencing, exonerating innocent death row prisoners, confronting abuse of the incarcerated and the mentally ill and aiding children prosecuted as adults. He has initiated major new anti-poverty and anti-discrimination efforts that challenge the legacy of racial inequality in America, including major projects to educate communities about slavery, lynching and racial segregation. Among his many awards are the MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Prize and 16 honorary degrees. He is the author of the critically acclaimed bestseller Just Mercy. Later in the show, we look deeper at the Equal Justice Initiative's work to address the history of slavery and lynchings with a short film by artist Molly Crabapple. All this, and Laura discusses how to end isolation, both in prisons and outside. teleSUR
