SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA ? Spencer Stone, one of the three Americans hailed as a hero after thwarting an apparent terror attack on a French train in August, is in critical condition after he was stabbed in Sacramento on Thursday.

Stone was stabbed in Midtown Sacramento early morning near the intersection of 21st Street and K Street. The area close to the stabbing has several nightclubs.

Stone left the Badlands Dance Club around midnight and was walking east towards 21st Street with friends when he reportedly had an argument with an "unknown suspect." ABC10 reports that two or three Asian males confronted Stone and a fight ensued. Stone may have been trying to protect a friend before he was stabbed multiple times in the torso.

The Sacramento Police Department responded and found Stone in critical condition. He's been taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.

Police haven't determined a motive behind a stabbing although alcohol is thought to be a contributing factor.
