In recent times, alcohol consumption at 2 U.S. research bases in Antarctica appears to have gotten a bit out of control.

Antarctica is a largely cold and desolate place that offers few opportunities for entertainment and interactions with a variety of people. 
Consuming alcohol as a means of diversion and solace is not uncommon. 
In recent times, the drinking appears to have gotten a bit out of control at two U.S. research bases. 
An audit performed by the National Science Foundation's Office of the Inspector General of the US Antarctic Program revealed there have been a number of alcohol-fueled incidents.
