Kunduz is Afghan ‘focus’, says Abdullah Abdullah

Afghanistan Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah told FRANCE 24 Thursday that his country’s “whole focus” is on recovering the strategic northern city of Kunduz, as Afghan troops recaptured the centre of the provincial capital from Taliban militants.

“At this stage, our whole focus is on recovering Kunduz and pushing the Taliban back. That’s the whole focus,” said Abdullah, later adding, “There certainly have been some weaknesses that have led to this.”
“Our hope is that Kunduz will be liberated from the Taliban and the people of Kunduz will be rescued.”
The seizing of Kunduz represented a major victory for the insurgents and raised questions about whether NATO-trained Afghan soldiers were battle-ready, particularly now that the majority of foreign combat troops have left.
In response to a question about the threat of the Islamic State group, Abdullah said “They are a factor behind the insecurity and instability in the country.”
