Préquel de la série éponyme, "Il giovane Montalbano" nous plonge dans les débuts de la vie du commissaire sicilien Montalbano, créé par Andrea Camilleri. Avant que Montalbano ne devient le respecté commissaire que nous connaissons, il était Salvo, jeune chef de police, fraîchement nommé à Vigata. Il ne sortait pas encore avec Livia, ne vivait pas encore dans cette maison du bord de mer,... Les seules constantes sont qu'il aimait déjà les bonnes choses et que son supérieur ne savait déjà pas prononcer les noms de quiconque correctement.
