USA: Tabare Vazquez Lambasts Phillip Morris

Uruguay’s President Tabare Vazquez lashed out at tobacco giant Phillip Morris as he defended his country’s sovereign decisions over public health. Phillip Morris is attempting to sue Uruguay for US$25 million for its strict tobacco laws that include a ban on tobacco advertising and for raising the issue of tobacco control at the World Health Organization. Vazquez said it is unethical that in some circumstances the courts of multinational organizations prioritize commercial interests over basic human rights, such as the right to health and life. teleSUR
