As many as 113 lawyers have been murdered in Honduras since the 2009 coup d’état, according to the Violence Observatory of the National University of Honduras. Most are believed to be associated with organized crime. Last Wednesday, however, Eduardo Montes, a lawyer who defended one of the companies related to the multi-million dollar embezzlement of funds from the Social Security Institute, was murdered on Wednesday by a family member of a patient that died of a lack of medication due to the embezzlement. This is the first murder related to corruption. Gerardo Torres reports from Central America for teleSUR
