Pelosi: We'll sustain veto on Planned Parenthood
  • 9 years ago
House Democrats have the votes to sustain a veto by President Barack Obama of legislation to defund Planned Parenthood, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said Thursday.
Republican leaders are considering trying to defund the group through a process known as reconciliation as a way to satisfy their conservative flank and avert a government shutdown.
The government will run out of money on Oct. 1 unless Congress passes a continuing resolution.
But conservative Republicans are demanding that Planned Parenthood be stripped of its $500 million in federal funding over a series of videos in which organization officials allegedly discuss fetal tissue sales.
Pelosi said House Democrats have leverage to work with Boehner on their priorities because Obama will likely veto anything that touches Planned Parenthood funding.
