Physical Evidence Brings The Story Of A Famed Shipwreck Into Light

An international team of researchers is believed to finally have the starting point for reconstructing the story of how 26 survivors made it through the harsh Alaskan winter after their ship, the Russian frigate Neva, crashed off the coast of Alaska in 1813.

Archaeologists are piecing together the wreckage of a ship whose crew, contents and final story have been shrouded in legend since it crashed off the coast of Alaska in 1813. 

What they've found suggests ingenuity kept the survivors alive. 

The wreckage of the frigate Neva was modified by crewmembers to ensure their survival in the harsh Alaskan winter, according to researchers. 

Gun flints were apparently used to start fires. Large musket balls were ground down to fit into smaller weapons.
