Ex Guatemalan President Otto Perez Molina began his career in the army in 1966. Later he studied at the Inter-American Defense College in Washington and at the School of the Americas, which trained many officers accused of human rights abuses in Latin America. During the 1970s and 80s, Perez Molina served in the country’s notorious special forces, also known as the Kabiles. He was allegedly involved in massacres of Maya communities that left a quarter of a million people dead. The scorched-earth operations involving the burning of villages and mass rape were allegedly supported by the CIA and Israel. teleSUR
