Haiti: Exodus of Stateless Haitians Begins

Some 200,000 residents of the Dominican Republic with Haitian roots now face deportation. The threat comes after the June 17 deadline for registration in the country’s regularization program, for which only a small number of eligible people were able to provide the documentation in time. Some had moved to the country to escape poverty in Haiti and many others were born in the Dominican Republic. Despite international calls to grant the stateless people citizenship or residency, the Dominican government has not budged on their deportation plans. teleSUR
