Dominican Republic: Public Outcry Against Ethnic Cleansing

Thousands of people of Haitian descent in the Dominican Republic have been stripped of their citizenship and face expulsion from the Caribbean island. Many took to the streets in protest against what some call an ethnic cleansing underway. The Dominican government had set a deadline of June 17 for undocumented Haitians to register their presence in the country. In 2013, a high court ruling took away the citizenship of children born to Haitian immigrants as far back as 1929, retroactively, leaving tens of thousands without citizenship. teleSUR
