Colombia: Farmers Oppose Free Trade Agreements

Colombian farmers took fresh vegetables, meat and dairy products from the countryside to the Campesino Market in Bogotá on Saturday in an effort to promote direct trade with the final consumer. The variety of ecosystems and climates means that the country has huge agricultural potential, but crops often rot before reaching the buyers, while ten million tons of food are imported per year. The campesinos say that free trade agreements have greatly harmed Colombian agriculture and that they need support from the government. They believe this is especially important now that the peace process is underway because as long as hunger and poverty exist, there will never be peace.
