At the Cannes Film Festival premiere of Cate Blanchett's new film Carol, women were denied entrance if they were wearing flat shoes, which erupted into the controversy known as "Flatgate." The festival director, Thierry Frémaux, took to Twitter to explain there was no footwear requirement, but many insiders say that wearing heels is an unspoken rule for women.
