Columbia Student Emma Sulkowicz Carries Her Mattress To Graduation

Columbia student Emma Sulkowicz said she’d carry her mattress around until the student who raped her in 2012 was expelled. She recently graduated with it in tow.
Columbia University visual arts student Emma Sulkowicz has been carrying her mattress around with her for about a year.
The act has served as both her senior thesis and her statement against the school for not taking action against the individual she says raped her in her dorm room.
When she began the endurance piece she vowed that she wouldn’t put the mattress down until the person who’d assaulted her was expelled from the school.
Upon graduating on May 19th, she still had it in tow.
