Mexico: 4 Candidates Assassinated, 3 Kidnapped

The upcoming July 7 local elections in Mexico have been marred by violence, with more than a dozen candidates threatened, kidnapped, or killed. In the past few weeks, four mayoral candidates have been killed and three others kidnapped or detained by armed groups. Most of the incidents have occurred in the states of Guerrero and Michoacan, where organized crime is particularly strong and apparently wants to flex its muscle. Mexico's political parties are calling for stricter security measures to protect the candidates and for holding rallies during daylight in conflictive areas.
