Nine women, including new bride, Neriza Fojas, 31, were on their way to her bridal party in Foster City. A fire broke out at the back of the rented Lincoln Town Car limo and smoke started filling the passenger area. The women knocked on the partition to tell Brown, but he said the music was too loud and he misunderstood them; he thought they wanted to smoke and he told them they couldn't.

The women persisted and Brown finally pulled over. He got out to call for help and a woman came through the partition. She then ran to open a door in the back, which Brown said let in more air to fuel the fire. Two good samaritans stopped to help. Four women managed to escape. The bodies of the others were found huddled against the partition.
