The derailment and subsequent explosion of a train carrying highly toxic chemicals in Belgium on Saturday caused the death of one and injured 49 more.

The train was traveling from the Netherlands to the seaport of Ghent in Belgium.

Traveling faster than the permitted speed limit, six of the train's 13 wagons derailed as the train changed tracks.

The train was transporting acrylonitrile, a highly flammable toxic chemical compound used in the making of plastics.

According to Belgium's interior minister, some of the chemical product seeped into the drainage system spreading toxic fumes farther than officials expected.

Exposure to the compound may cause Mucus membrane irritation, headaches and dizziness and nausea.

The incident was the third of its kind to have occurred in Belgium since May last year.
