Eight gunmen riding in a black car and on two motorbikes arrived at the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) election campaign rally in Farrukhabad, near Matital Road in Multan, the Express Tribune reported.
They walked towards the crowd and opened fire, killing Ali Haider Gilani's secretary and his private bodyguard.
According to reports, a bullet also hit Gilani, who was bleeding as the gunmen dragged him into their car. They then fled the scene.
According to reports, other several people were injured.
Police arrested five suspects, two of whom they said have information related to the case.
Gilani's father and other family members said that Ali Haider had been receiving kidnapping and death from militants ahead of the rally from sectarian militant groups Sipah-e-Sahaba and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, the Express Tribune reported.
Several people were injured in the shooting. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
