Mumbai building collapse death toll rises to ten

Ten people were killed and seven injured when part of a six-story residential building collapsed in central Mumbai, authorities said Tuesday. The apartment building, located in Mumbai's Mahim district, contained at least 16 apartments and housed a Maruti Suzuki showroom on the ground floor.

While officials have yet to announce the cause of the collapse, residents claim illegal construction carried out in the car showroom was to blame. Two days of heavy monsoon rains preceded the collapse of one wing of the 40-year-old building. Emergency workers aided residents trapped underneath the nearly two-story-high pile of rubble. Authorities cordoned off the area, fearing that the remaining half of the building would cave in. The accident follows the collapse of a seven-story building along Mumbai's outskirts that killed 74 people in early April.
