Oil spill hits Thailand tourist resort

An oil spill from an offshore pipeline leak in Thailand has reached the popular tourist destination Koh Samet.
The leak took place at a single point mooring about 20 kilometers southeast of the Map Ta Phut port in Rayong province on July 27. It was reported about 50,000 litres of crude oil was leaked from the pipeline and drifted to the southeast.
According to local media, the oil slick was about 800 metres wide and 2.5 kilometres long. Streaks of crude oil washed up on the beach at Prao Bay on Koh Samet over the weekend. Authorities have closed the bay to the public as workers work to remove the oil from the beach and nearby waters.
