A vice admiral in the Mexican navy was killed in an ambush in the western state of Michoacan on July 28. According to Reuters, assailants armed with high-calibre rifles killed Vice Admiral Carlos Miguel Salazar Ramonet who commanded the naval base at the Pacific beach resort of Puerto Vallarta, along with another officer.

Local media reports that Ramonet was travelling in a white SUV with his wife, a bodyguard and a driver on Atlacomulco-Guadalajara highway. Ramonet ordered the driver to take an alternate route after learning the main road was closed due to a protest. A truck intercepted and blocked their way on a country road between two villages. Another truck carrying heavily armed assailants arrived minutes later. Both Ramonet and his bodyguard were killed, while his wife and the driver were injured.

Authorities have arrested three suspects related to the crime. The suspects are believed to be members of the criminal organization Knights Templar Cartel.
