Mexico horse rampage: 30 police horses storm through Mexico City

A herd of 30 police horses stormed a major highway in Mexico City on Monday, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

The BBC in Spanish reported that a protest against education reform was underway near Congress and that the horses were brought in by police to keep the rally under control. The animals were released from the trailers and wearing saddles when at least one got spooked from the sound of car engines and ran off; the others followed suit.

The horses merged with traffic on the Circuito Bicentenario, one of the city busiest roadways. According to videos taken by drivers on the highway and posted to the Internet, the horses galloped with traffic, sometimes dragging police helmets along with them.

The New York Daily reported that one driver said a horse hit his car while stopped at a traffic light. The horse fell over, got up again, and the driver continued.

At least 11 cars were damaged in the stampede and one taxi was totally destroyed. One person was injured after being trampled on, but no other serious human injuries were reported. Some of the horses, other the other hand, had been hurt, video footage shows. A veterinarian administered treatment on the roadside.

The city government said it will pay for damages to automobiles suffered during the stampede, according to reports.

"I have given instructions to the legal affairs (department) so we can cover all the damage," Federal District Public Safety Secretary Jesus Rodriguez Almeida said, according to the Latin American Herald Tribune.

"It was like 'Jumanji'", the official also said about the stampede, referring to the 1995 Robin Williams film about an animal board game that comes to life.
