An Italian tourist fell seven storeys down a lift shaft to his death after climbing out of the lift when it became stuck between floors in an apartment building in Sydney. His body was found by the police at the bottom of the lift shaft at a building on Quay Street in Haymarket on Wednesday (September 11)

It was reported that the man, whose first name is believed to be Andrea, was with two friends when they became trapped in the lift at about 1:45 am. The three of them reportedly pressed the emergency help button but then decided to pry the doors open while the lift was between levels. It is believed that the victim was the first to squeeze through the small gap but he missed the landing below and plunged seven storeys to his death. Two other people who were in the lift with the victim before he fell have been treated for shock.

The victim, aged mid to late 20s, is believed to have only been in Sydney for 10 days. A resident on the 13th floor said the design of the lift meant there was a gap around it which somebody could fit through. Police said they could not confirm reports that the dead man was returning to his backpackers' accommodation at the time. A crime scene has been established in the lift shaft and forensic officers have examined the area. Detectives have interviewed a number of witnesses and are yet to determine the full circumstances surrounding the man's death. However, it was reported that there do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances to the accident.
