Two Singaporean divers drowned at Tioman after air tanks run out

Two Singaporeans, including a scuba diving instructor, drowned while scuba diving in Tioman Island, a small island located 32 km off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia on September 7.
Local media reports that the accident took place at around noon when a newlywed couple was practising diving skills with an instructor. The three of them were scuba diving about 25 meters from the beach.
It was reported that the wife suddenly noticed that her husband and their coach were having some kind of breathing difficulties. She then quickly went up to the surface and screamed for help. A group of other divers nearby then rushed to their assistance and helped to bring the two victims out of the water. Some even tried to give cardiopulmonary resuscitation to the victims, but the efforts were in vain. The bodies of the two victims were later transferred to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital for post mortem.
Shin Min daily reports that the two victims used leftover oxygen from the air tanks they used in their diving session in the previous day, which led to the out-of-air situations in this diving session. It was also reported that the victims were having difficulties with their buoyancy compensator device (BCD).
The 35-year-old Singaporean victim was a researcher at the Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology in Singapore. He received a PhD degree in bioengineering from the National University of Singapore. He married to his wife, who witnessed the accident, only two months ago. The other victim was a 48-year-old diving instructor, also a Singaporean.
