Rich Chinese use American surrogates to have babies

Wealthy Chinese couples who aren't able to conceive on their own, want a way around China's family planning policies, or who want U.S. citizenship for their children, are turning to surrogacy agencies to make babies.
Agencies are also happily obliging with both Chinese and American surrogacy agencies saying demand from Chinese couples has risen sharply in the last two years, according to The Telegraph.
Turning to U.S. surrogacy agencies is an attractive alternative for many wealthy couples, as surrogacy is illegal in China. In fact, some couples still fake pregnancies in order to keep surrogates a secret.
However, seeking surrogacy overseas is not in itself illegal. Meanwhile, having American surrogate mothers give birth to Chinese couples' children in the U.S. also opens up the option of allowing Chinese families to emigrate later on, as U.S. citizens may apply for Green Cards for their parents after they turn 21.
The service is gaining so much traction that U.S. fertility clinics and surrogacy agencies are beginning to create Chinese-language websites and hiring Mandarin speakers to interact with their clients.
President John Weltman of Boston-based Circle Surrogacy, which has handled half a dozen Chinese surrogacy cases over the last five years, said he would be surprised if the number of cases doesn't double within the next three or four months.
Circle Surrogacy handles about 140 surrogacy cases a year, 65 per cent of them for clients outside the United States.
Meanwhile, increased interest from Chinese couples in American surrogates has created some tension, as U.S. agency staff say Chinese clients treat surrogacy as a strictly commercial transaction, while they ask parents to develop personal relationships with surrogates.
