A gunman in Inglewood, Los Angeles was taken into custody after holding two people hostage in a standoff that last nearly nine hours on Wednesday.

A neighbor called the police after witnessing the suspect drag a 14-year-old girl back into a house at around 12:30 p.m. The 45-year-old suspect is believed to be the boyfriend of the girl's mother, according to the L.A. Times.

The police opened fire after the suspect fired shots from the house where he hid with two hostages, the 14-year-old girl and her mother.

One officer was shot in the chest but was protected from fatal injuries by his bulletproof vest. Another officer injured her leg while helping her fallen colleague.

More police and a SWAT team arrived at the Inglewood home following the shootout. During the nearly nine-hour standoff, residents of the neighborhood were ordered to stay put while the police went door to door to evacuate each house.

Crisis negotiators conversed sporadically with the suspect via cell phone. The suspect made no specific demands and conceded to exiting the house alone with his arms raised at 9:15 p.m.
