Hero teen accidentally shot dead by friend

Aubrey Peters, a 16-year-old high school junior from Noblesville, Indiana, was killed on Sunday night in what police believe was an accidental shooting by a friend while the pair were socialising in his home with two other young men.

In a completely avoidable tragedy, 20-year-old Jacob Travis McDaniel is believed to have shot Peters while fooling around with firearms shortly before midnight.

One of the men present told police McDaniel was showing off to his friends with a shotgun and a handgun. He is said to have tried to get Peters to take the handgun but she refused to touch it.

He then removed the clip from the gun, flicked the safety, the witness told police, saying he then pointed it at Peters and, apparently, forgetting the semiautomatic gun still had a bullet in the chamber pulled the trigger, firing one round.

The bullet struck Peters in the chest who then clutched her chest and ask "what just happened" before falling to the ground, reportedly.

The witness told police McDaniel asked those present to tell officers that the the handgun had fallen from a table causing an accidental discharge.

Police arrived shortly after the shooting and attempted to revive the teen until paramedics arrived. They were unsuccessful. She was taken to St. Vincent Indianapolis Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Aubrey Peters was lauded for her bravery in 2010 for helping to save the lives of two young kids who fell into a frozen water reservoir behind their home.

Friends and family paid their respects at a memorial set up on the shore of Morse lake.

McDaniel has been charged with reckless homicide and pointing a weapon.
