Thousands flee Myanmar violence, 500 Rohingya migrants wash ashore in Indonesia - TomoNews

About 500 members of Myanmar's Rohingya Muslim community have been rescued off the coast of Indonesia, according to multiple reports.

The boats carrying men, women and children, became stranded in waters off Aceh province when the migrants were rescued, the BBC reported.

Myanmar — also known as Burma — refuses to recognise Rohingya as citizens, resulting in hundreds of thousands fleeing persecution there in recent years. The main escape route has generally been the jungle border with Thailand, but many have also fled the country by sea.

The group that was rescued in Indonesia may have been trying to reach Malaysia, the BBC reported Steve Hamilton of the International Organisation for Migration as saying.

The BBC also reported that migrants thought they had arrived in Malaysia and were told to swim to shore, only to find out later that they had reached Indonesia.

Reports say thousands more migrants may still be out at sea.
