Unidentified gunmen shot and killed a health official supervising an anti-polio vaccination campaign after storming a hospital on Saturday.

Two additional hospital staff were wounded in the shooting at a government-run hospital in the town of Mattani, located on the outskirts of Peshawar.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but Taliban militants have been going after health workers and security personnel during vaccination drives.

"Two men riding a motorcycle stormed the office of an immunization officer located inside the premises of Civil Hospital Mattani and shot him dead," police official Ijaz Khan said. "Two other local staff of the hospital including a woman were injured in the attack," Khan added.

The authorities said the gunmen fled the scene on the motorbike after the attack.

Provincial health minister of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province Shaukat Ali confirmed the attack. "Routine immunization of children was going on in the hospital at the time of the attack," Ali said.
