A group of vigilantes in Mexico has seized the town of Nueva Italia in the western state of Michoacan on Sunday morning (January 12) after clashing with drug cartel members.

According to the BBC, more than a hundred men entered the town and disarmed local police. They exchanged fire with alleged members of the Knights Templar drug cartel. Tico Times reported that two members of the vigilantes were wounded in the gunbattle.

The BBC reported that the vigilantes, also known as self-defence groups or community police, control several towns in Michoacan state such as Paracuaro and Antunez. They reportedly said they are advancing towards Apatzingan, the alleged headquarters of the Knights Templar drug cartel.

The vigilantes were set up by civilians who claim the army and the police have failed to protect them from drug cartels.
