Kenyan fighter jets attacked an Al-Shabaab camp in Somalia on Thursday (January 9), killing at least 30 militants.

The strike took place in Garbarahey in Gedo region, around 600 km northwest of the Somali capital Mogadishu and near the border with Kenya and Ethiopia.

According to the AFP, Kenya Defence Force fighter jets attacked an Al-Shabaab camp on Thursday evening, where a meeting was being held.

Press TV quoted from an unnamed eyewitness said that Kenyan fighter jets fired at least 10 missiles at the area. It was reported that Initial battle damage assessment indicates more than 30 Al-Shabaab militants were killed, including key commanders. Five vehicles and other "key assets" were also destroyed in the strike.

Kenya has sent its military to Somalia to fight Al-Shabaab militants since 2011. Al-Shabaab militants claimed responsibility for an attack on the Westgate Mall in Nairobi that killed 67 people in September and said it was a retribution for Kenya's involvement in Somalia.
